What is whatzit? It's two parts cornstarch, one part water, mixed together in a bowl. It has properties of both solids and liquids. The class tried stirring it fast, stirring it slowly, making it into a ball, pouring it from one bowl to another, poking it fast, and poking it slowly. It was a fun investigation! And a little messy, too.

This was a true gift to the lunch supervisors and SOOOOO appreciated." Mrs. Seisser, Technology Facilitator, is teaming up with fifth grade teachers to offer a break-out box activity relating to the matter unit. In groups of three and on two teams, students creatively worked together to use clues to solve various challenges and open the locks on special boxes in the classroom. Creative speeches, many with props and slideshows in the background, were shared with our class. Also, fifth graders viewed each other's bio-bottles and information about each person. What a fun party! A huge thanks goes to Mrs. Nanisetty and Mrs. Clayton for the organization and implementation of a fuper-fun-last-Valentines-party of elementary school for our class! It was great to have the helping hands and friendly smiles of many other parents as well! I love watching kids play! It reminds me of when my own children were young. It's so good for kids to use their creativity to amuse themselves. Also, it's a great opportunity to build social skills and get to know people better. Two periods of the day, fifth grades flowed freely between the classrooms and had a lot of fun. I set up a schedule so that I could play the game Apples to Apples with small groups of students in my class throughout the day, which I really enjoyed! Students felt balloons containing matter in different states. They attempted to stir and pile up various liquids and solids, making observations. They used magnifying glasses to look closely. We discussed properties of solids, liquids, and gases and also explored the topic of plasma. Here are some "creations" from Art class. Mr. DeMarco made one for me. :) Ask your child more about this ... |
