For three weeks now, four wagon trains in our classroom have been led toward Oregon on the Hacker's Trail. Wagon Masters Deven, Natalie, Charlie and Ben have led their pioneers on this challenging journey. They have faced sickness, insects, severe weather, hostile Native Americans, and today, a river crossing. Pioneers utilized their engineering ideas to construct bridges. Most of our wagon trains succeeded and avoided delay points and reduced energy factors. Tomorrow, each wagon train's final fate and success or failure will be determined.

Our class enjoyed some time outside with our kindergarten friends last Friday... kindergarteners hopping, jumping, and calling out sight words and other words they wanted to learn. The fifth graders and the kindergarteners really bring out the best in each other!
After working for six weeks on Personalized Learning projects, students shared their findings with classmates either whole-class or in a small group. Students shared summaries, self-created websites, brochures, dioramas, and more. Important components of Personalized Learning were goal-setting, reflection, and research. It was exciting to see the variety of topics, findings, and enthusiasm of students. Hopefully this experience will encourage students to be lifelong learners. |
