Our corn seeds are literally getting taller each day! Students who have taken good care of their seeds are astounded by the height of these plants. Corn seeds were planted in both soil, in perlite (an inorganic substance), and in a mixture of the two. Some results are surprising!

Corn seeds were planted in both soil, in perlite (an inorganic substance), and in a mixture of the two. Some results are surprising! Bubbles, chalk, and recess time with our kindergarten buddies was fun. It was sweet to see how kind and helpful fifth graders can be toward the younger children. In a blink, these kindergarteners will be fifth graders. Having good role models makes such a positive difference at our school! This was the first time in my teaching career that students have requested a water balloon toss as a cotton ball (whole class behavior) reward. We lucked out with a hot day and with the best room rep ever, Mrs. Hoffman, who prepared the water balloons and snapped some photos! She even donated bubbles to each student, which were enjoyed during our last kindergarten buddy session! Mrs. Jenkins concluded a four-week unit preparing OMS fifth graders for middle school. Activities, ideas, resources, challenges, reflections, and advice are all neatly organized in binders! These kids are READY! What happens when kids are engaged in what they are reading? They infer, they predict, they make connections, they ask questions, and they use their schema to read and understand at high levels. Many of these lofty thoughts were captured on sticky notes during our novel units! Mr. Adam Harris visited our classroom to share about his role as Communications Coordinator in School District 25. He helped us understand how to communicate effectively, how to consider one's audience, and how to choose the best method of communication. He usually uses video as his format and shared a couple sample clips, including one from World of Work, which included students in our class and other fifth grade classes as reporters. |
