In preparation for Open House, we took a couple practice selfies as a class. You can find all of the other amusing selfies under Photos. Thanks, everyone, for coming to Open House!
In preparation for Open House, we took a couple practice selfies as a class. You can find all of the other amusing selfies under Photos. Thanks, everyone, for coming to Open House! There is one more week left in the all-district reading of the book A Nest for Celeste. Mrs. Watanuki, Advanced Learning Facilitator, joined our class with armloads of building supplies and issued an engineering challenge to teams of three. Planning, building, sharing, and peer feedback were all elements of the process. There were thoughtful reasons, persuasive techniques, and insightful comebacks. Are the British laws fair? What really happened at the Boston Massacre? Should the colonists be punished for the Boston Tea Party? Excitement and differing opinions filled the room! This week, all the girls in the class had lunch together in room 110. The better we all get to know each other, the more we like each other. We enjoyed eating, talking, listening to music, playing with wind-up toys, and more. It was fun! Boy's lunch will be next week! Today, Lilly shared about herself by explaining pictures and decorations on her poster, sharing a list of her favorites, and having the class guess why she put some special objects in her sack. This is such a fun way for us to get to know each other! Lilly also received a "Birthday Wishes" book from the class earlier this week. This group of personas has been sharing about life in the colonies in 1776 for 22 years. It was interesting to learn about this time period by hearing their stories and seeing their artifacts. This trapper explained how a beaver pelt was worth the same as a teacher's salary for one year. He also explained how beavers are a renewable resource. Writing class is very active in 5-1. We have discussed and practiced several effective writing strategies such as focus, sensory details, dialogue, thought and feelings, rich verbs, figurative language, and more. Almost always, students compose on laptops. This week, several students experimented with a Google feature of voice typing. Students read their writing in front of the whole class or with partners. After sharing, specific, positive feedback is given by fellow students. Next week, our class will apply all the skills we have been working on to a personal narrative essay. This is one that all fifth graders will write. Hopefully, these will be completed and on display at Open House later this month. It was great to walk to school on such a beautiful day for National Walk to School Day! Nice job to everyone who participated. Mrs. Pusateri does a great job organizing this every year! I enjoyed walking with Mrs. Lutton, Ms. Wrobel and several students. |
