Thanks to parent volunteers, our class had a lot of fun making slime, a pumpkin craft, and origami. They also played Halloween Tellistrations and Mad Libs. They covered a partner in toilet paper as a mummy and participated in several different relay races in the gym. It was a lot of fun!

They covered a partner in toilet paper as a mummy and participated in several different relay races in the gym. It was a lot of fun! What do you get when you have 112 fifth graders, 112 creatively decorated t-shirts, and 112 persuasive book talks being shared? Extraordinary potential for fresh enthusiasm for a variety of books! Each student designed a t-shirt with decorations relating to one of their favorite books. After organizing information about the story's plot and generating persuasive ideas, the students shared their "book talk" with our class. Next week, all fifth graders will share with each other and gather ideas for books they want to read. Former principal Dr. FitzPatrick visited our classroom and participated in one of our teams' cooperative obstacle courses. The team supported each other throughout the activities and challenges. They were able to successfully cross the finish line. During the Schoolwide Launch unit, students have practiced gathering their ideas for small group, full-class, and this time-half class conversations. They stop and jot before, during, and after the reading of a piece of literature. These notes might be predictions, inferences, questions, or connections. They are also learning how to start conversations, thoughtfully listen to the ideas of others, and grow ideas within a group. Throughout the week, debate teams role played and shared their views on this topic: Should colonists declare their independence from Britain? Debaters shared examples from history and their own thinking to show the loyalist and patriot perspective. |
