Mrs. Gryfakis shared about the artist Georgia O'Keefe, and she distributed fresh flowers to the students. They were encouraged to draw a close-up view of their flower. Beautiful!
Mrs. Gryfakis shared about the artist Georgia O'Keefe, and she distributed fresh flowers to the students. They were encouraged to draw a close-up view of their flower. Beautiful! How did the Continental Army win their battles? Mr. Quick led the students in our class and Mrs. Fowler's class in simulations which helped us to understand battle strategies from the Revolutionary War. STEM stands for Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Led by OMS' Advanced Learning Facilitators, Mrs. Watanuki and Mrs. Jenkins, students were asked to create a carrier that could transport an "elf" down a zipline. After brainstorming and sketching in groups of two or three, students designed and created contraptions out of household supplies. After a first "run," groups were asked to make improvements and try again. Finally, they were asked to reflect on the experience. They did a great job, and it was a lot of fun! We hope students will consider extending their learning at home in similar ways. We might have some young engineers in the making! What a treat it has been to listen to students share their personal narrative essays! Classmates responded with specific, positive feedback for their peers after each essay was shared. Some students were even taking notes while classmates read their essays so that they could remember the specific parts and words of the essay they wanted to compliment. It was a very difficult task to choose from the many talented, qualified, and interested students who applied for the position of Student Coucil representative. This year's reps have done a fantastic job gathering input from our class and buddy class (Mrs. Naughten's kindergarteners), attending meetings, and choosing and advertising school spirit days. The first spirit day is Friday, December 16. All Olive Owls are asked to wear pajamas to school that day. Next, the reps will be working with the Character Counts committee to assist with upcoming projects. Our class reflected on our study of the Human Body. I am sharing some of them because not only do "kids say the darndest things," but I thought you would find their responses interesting...
Why do you think it was important to learn about the human body? -to understand it and how to take care of it -to help us understand what a doctor does -you can use the information later in life for jobs such as an EMT -in case you become a doctor or surgeon -so you know what is inside of you -so now we know what to do to stay healthy -so we can treat our body better and respect it -so if something happen like you faint, you know why What are some things you learned in this unit that you will carry through in your own life? -how you breathe and how your muscles work -to eat calcium because it makes your bones strong -that eating healthy and exercising are a big part for your body to stay healthy -I will know how to take my pulse and find out my heart-rate while exercising -Now that I know how good working out is for me, I will probably try to work out more -not to smoke and to stay healthy -I learned about muscle fatigue, and it will help me so I know how to not get it -how your organ systems work -how your bones get strong by milk. I will keep eating and drinking milk products to stay strong -now I know it’s important to drink water and milk -I will eat more vegetables -I will stretch before physical activities Were there any questions you had at the beginning of this unit that you are able to answer now? -why your face gets red when you exercise -how does an elbow move… by joints and ligaments -how blood gives you nutrients so now I can say it comes from the food you eat -how you do involuntary responses and reflexes -how fast a message traveled from your brain to the muscle…268 miles per hour -how your pupil gets bigger and smaller -why smoking is bad for you -why you have hair and how it grows -why you get the wind knocked out of you -where I can find my pulse and how to tell how many times my heart beats per minute -how my heart pumps -what cells are -where saliva comes from -why hair turns gray -how your brain stores thoughts -how your muscles work -if blood is red or blue…it’s red -that ligaments and tendons are different things -that the heart is a muscle What was your favorite part about this unit and why? -the experiment with the straws because it was challenging -when we turned off the light, and we saw our pupils get bigger and smaller -I liked the muscle fatigue the most because I thought it was interesting to see how fast your muscles got tired -learning about the different systems because it explains every part of the human body -when we made the limb models because I like to build stuff out of special supplies and test it out like the egg drop -the bone activity because we got to touch the animal bone and try to get the marrow out of the middle -examining the bone because I could see what was inside of my bone looks like -catching the ruler to see how long it took for me to react -learning about the nervous system because it is interesting how your brain sends messages |
