Olive-Mary Stitt's fifth graders and teachers walked to Thomas Middle School a couple weeks ago for a concert. They joined the audience of Thomas band students, some parents and TMS faculty for a performance by the Bob Jones University Wind Ensemble. The band director and members were very interactive before and during the concert. This was a great inspiration for all of us, especially our fifth grade band members who are just starting to build their skills as musicians.

Our classroom came alive as students became colonists from the 1700's. Half the class had been assigned the role of either a patriot or loyalist and had been researching and preparing their arguments to share with their opposition. Many good points were brought up and discussed. We observed some debating skills in our class members that we didn't know about! Way to go! More pictures are on the class website. Also, students reflected on the debate, and these will be shared at conferences.
This week, not only did the OMS "Nest" get full, thanks to so many generous families, but our days were full as well. The children have been working hard in every subject area. They are determining main idea and details in non-fiction text, dividing numbers in math, composing personal narratives in writing, comparing the viewpoints of various loyalists and patriots in Social Science, and much, much more!
