Best Valentine party ever... thanks to Mrs. Wade, Mrs. Burda, Mrs. Geissenberger, Mrs. Hernandez, Mrs. Sheehan, Mr. Harwood, and Mrs. Sena! The stations were great, and each one different... a paper heart chain making competition, cupid's arrow throwing challenge, acrylic painting on canvases, photo opp, and an emoji bag-making craft. And, of course, seeing everyone's valentine boxes and exchanging valentines was fun, too! We didn't even miss having food at the party!
Today was not a typical day at school. The warmer temperatures and sunshine prompted three experiments that brought us outside four times throughout the day. We were equipped with science packets, clipboards, chalk, and measuring tape. We traced shadows, measured their heights, observed patterns, and graphed results. We discussed what caused these patterns. We also sketched the landscape beyond the playground facing south and tracked the apparent movement of the sun through the sky. We also measured with our fists how high off of the horizon the sun rose in the sky. We also graphed these results. This week we will synthesize how this data fits together. What happens when you give fifth graders an afternoon to make up their own fun? Without electronic devices? Well... they have a good time. They interact with lots of different peers. They use their imaginations. They feel tired at the end of the afternoon. There's a lot of variety and activity... everything from dress-up and a play to the playing of instruments. There's fort-building, board games, basketball, Lego-building, and a whole lot more. Hopefully, this afternoon will spark everyone's enthusiasm for unstructured play and creative social interactions. |
