Commonly in math class, randomly-chosen partners work together on workbook pages to practice the skill from the lesson. Students are encouraged to talk about each step of problems as they solve them. Book Clubs of two, three, and four people spend part of their class time reading their books together and part of their time discussing the books. This week, students reflected and evaluated themselves on how well they listen, initiate, build on the ideas of others, encourage classmates to share, and cite evidence to back up their thinking. Miss Petro, student teacher, brightens up our classroom. She has learned everyone's name and is eager to assist and encourage all of us! For now, she spends three half days at OMS each week. She will be observing and assisting in other classrooms for the next few weeks as well. Students share their thoughts and questions relating to a chapter in Gary Paulsen's book My Life in Dog Years. Every person's opinions and thoughts are valued. Collectively, these shared ideas guide students in discovering the deeper meaning of the story and their own feelings relating to the story. Today's writing lesson started outside on the west playground as we spent time listening closely and recording sounds we heard. We wrote down both what we thought was causing the noise and also the sound word that we heard, which is called onomatopoeia. Whoosh, ku-kunk, chirp chirp, vrooommmm, bonk, slap, raarrr, etc. Then students wrote about a time when they heard a sound/sounds and how the sound made them feel. |
