Our class paired up with Ms. Musich's second grade class to read tall tales about Johnny Appleseed! His birthday was last week, and though he was a real person, many exaggerated stories about him have been passed down through the generations. The class made little boxes that show which constellations are visible in the night sky during each of the different seasons! When used with the constellation guide which was sent home, constellations can be identified! Partners traced shadows made by a flashlight simulating the sun rising in the east and setting in the western sky. Our class did a nice job designing t-shirts, writing book talks, and sharing their book talks with each other and other fifth graders. Now they have so many ideas of great books to read! After forming new teams (seating chart), students play a game to get to know each other. Pictionary was fun! At the end of each month, five "high fives" that were earned by students in 5-1 are pulled out of the high five bin. Each of those students selects a friend, and we have a special lunch together! We talk, laugh, and play with funny little wind-up toys and other gadgets/toys. Retired OMS teacher, guest teacher in 5-1 this week, and my good friend, Mrs. Tranter, shared her newly published book, Bert the Boxer with the class. What an inspiring role model of sharing our writing and passions with others. Four times in one day, our class ventured outside and measured shadows, counted how many of our "fists" the sun appeared above the horizon, and observed the movement of the sun. We started graphing our data and will continue to do so this week. Students will discover the inverse relationship between the rise and fall of the sun on the horizon and the length of shadows. They will write a constructed response explaining these phenomena. |
